Lake Como
Crescent City, Florida

Lake Como is an unincorporated village situated on the large, clear lake for which it is named, in an under-developed back-country region of the state. It is an area of such quiet charm that northern visitors discovered its lakes and meadows and towering woods well before the turn of the last century and established nearby a resort hotel and shooting lodge.

The lake's off-the-highway location seems to have protected it from most of the unpleasant aspects of growth. It is a place where children pad barefooted along oak-and-pine-shaded spots on a lake that may be one of the finest in the country for high-quality water recreation for all seasons. Because the area is surrounded by Lake George, the second largest in Florida, Lake Crescent, and the Ocala National Forest, there is nothing for miles to threaten its clear, clean air.

Local Area Information

Lake Como can be the source of your recreation pleasure. Because of the unusual cleanliness and clarity of the water, the lake is highly desirable for swimming, fishing, skiing, sailing, canoeing, snorkeling, and tubing which, in Florida, can be enjoyed most of the year. Water skiing is superb on smooth, protected inlets. Long stretches of open water are great for sailing. Or the less active may prefer just drifting on an inner tube. There is no public access to the lake and very little boat traffic. The area's water control agency, the St. Johns River Water Management District, has designated Lake Como as a protected body of water, assuring its future.

Fishing Information

Lake Como, Lake Broward, Lake George, Lake Crescent, and the St. Johns River make up an area that is known as the "Bass Capital of the World." The fisherman has his choice of miles and miles of shoreline, acres of grass beds, schooling bars, and coves. Wynn Davis, who was for years the fishing editor of “Outdoor Life” magazine, repeatedly called the area “the best bass water in the United States.”
