Lake Freeman
Monticello, IndianaWhile there are larger lakes in the state, the man-made Freeman Lake is unequaled anywhere in Indiana because the run-of-the-river dam maintains a nearly constant water level in the lake throughout the year. More than 100 camps, resorts and other commercial enterprises are located around the lake, in addition to the more than 1,000 year-around homes, numerous summer cottages and mobile homes. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the influx of summer residents and visitors to the area multiples the population several times. Tourism alone is said to generate an estimated $70 million annually in retail sales and services, making tourism one of White County's economic cornerstones.

| Fishing Information |
Enjoy fishing on Lake Freeman. There is a large variety of fish to catch, from bass fishing, catfish fishing, bluegill fishing, and many others.
Both fishing licenses and free hunting and fishing regulation booklets can be obtained at many locations throughout the county, including small bait shops. In addition to selling fishing licenses and providing regulation booklets, local bait shops are a good source of information concerning state fishing regulations. Both the licenses and regulation booklets are also available from the Circuit Court Clerk at the White County Building. A state fishing license must be purchased by every angler, with the following exceptions:
- Any Indiana resident 65 years of age or older
- Anyone under 17 years old
- Indiana residents who are legally blind
- Residents of state-owned mental facilities
- Those residents of a licensed healthcare facility in Indiana who are taking part in a supervised activity sponsored by the facility.
- Indiana residents on leave from active duty in the military who have their military ID and leave papers. Those in the military not from Indiana can fish with a military ID, leave papers and a resident license or voter registration card.
- The costs and types of licenses vary. Indiana residents can buy an annual license for $14.25 or a one-day license for $7. (An Indiana resident is defined as a person who has lived in Indiana continuously for 60 days preceding the date of license or permit purchase.)
- Non-resident licenses are $24.75 for one year; $7 for a one day license; and $12.75 for a seven-day license.
- A combined hunting and fishing license is $20.75 for state residents.
- People must have licenses in their possession when fishing. It must be carried on your person, along with one other piece of identification.
- Fines for fishing without a license range from $1 to $500, plus court costs. The amount of the fine is determined by the judge.
