Indian Lake
Dowagiac, Michigan
Indian Lake is one of only (3) 500 plus acre lakes in Southwest Michigan. There are multiple small lakes in the area that were formed at the turn of the 20th century when settlers drained the primarily swamp land for farming. The Potawatamee Indian Ancestors were well skilled in crossing the large wetland area, and remain engrained in the culture to this day. Recently decades of growth in the 1970's and 1980's took their toll on the pristine lake environment. By Late 1987, the local community of Indian Lake began to organize what would become a very successful lake restoration. Raffles, fund raisers, and 50/50 contests raised the initial funds to buy a weed harvester for the lake. Years of Septic and Fertilizer run off had over fertilized the lake creating silt which in turn created excessive plant material growth. In the mid 1990's, a large push was made to connect to city sewer systems. This was accomplished in 1996. The fund raising continued in the 1990's with the establishments of a dredge project. Each Land owner on the lake paid to have their portion dredged. The lake began to show dramatic improvement. Lower silt levels allowed for deeper water and less plant growth. This in turn helped to clear the water. As the game fish began to see better, the fishing picked up dramatically. Today, Indian Lake is known for its excellent bass fishing again. The success has spread. The chain of lakes in the area are all following suit and hooking up to city sewer systems. Credit is due to all of the residents on Indian Lake that worked hard together, and committed the money and time to save the lake.
