Greenwood Lake is located in northern New Jersey on the New Jersey/New York border. Greenwood Lake is about 20 miles northwest of Paterson, New Jersey.  The Greenwood Lake valley is flanked by the Appalachian Trail, Hewitt State Forest, and the Bearfort Mountains to the west and Sterling Forest® and Ringwood State Parks to the east. Only 45 miles from Manhattan, the area is a perfect destination for an afternoon drive or as an escape after a long day working in the city. The lake is 1,920 acres in size, 9.6 miles long, and 1.2 miles wide, with a mean depth of  17 feet and a maximum depth of  57 feet (as of 1995).

Although one of the smallest and most densely populated states in the nation, New Jersey is able to offer many fishing opportunities. From striped bass and American shad fishing in the Delaware River to offshore sport fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey anglers have some of the widest varieties of fishing opportunities available anywhere.

The N.J. Division of Fish and Wildlife stocks more than 200 waters with catchable-size fish, primarily brook, brown and rainbow trout. Warmwater anglers also have a field day in New Jersey. In recent years the Division has been stocking several introduced game and panfish species, including northern pike, tiger and "true" muskellunge, walleye, hybrid striped bass and channel catfish into the lakes and rivers of the state.
