Recreational opportunities are abundant at Lake Thunderhead with its 2 swimming beaches, a campground North of the dam, 2 tennis courts, a nine hole sand green golf course, water sports such as water skiing, sailing and jet skiing. The sports area offers a basketball court, shuffleboard court and play equipment. The Unionville City airport is located at Lake Thunderhead. There is no hunting allowed at Lake Thunderhead. Northern Missouri has a national reputation for excellent hunting. There are approximately 30,000 acres of State forest hunting ground within a 30-minute drive of the lake, as well as opportunities to purchase individual recreational tracts. Fishing is a popular activity at the lake. The depth of the lake is 27 to 32 feet with numerous coves averaging 8 to 10 feet. The lake has many natural springs, a dense Shad population, and an established cattail habitat for excellent fishing. It has been professionaly stocked with Bass, Crappie, Walleye, Bluegill and Catfish. Bass and Walleye average 2.5 to 3 lbs, with some much larger. Crappie average 1/2 to 3/4 lbs, with some being caught up to 16" or more. Catfish average 3 to 4 lbs, with some being caught up to 15 lbs or more on rod and reel, line, and jugs between sunset and sunrise. The entire family can enjoy fishing from a pontoon boat. We have one of the best, all around fishing lakes in Iowa and Missouri. Property owners can test their skills at tournaments held annually.
