The historic Miller-Johnson House as described in Pine Log & Greek Revival has been in one family since 1876.
"There is an old-fashioned spaciousness in the setting of boxwoods and gardens surrounding the Miller-Johnson house, facing east to U.S. 29. At the intersection of two stone paved walks, a large millstone from the historic Johnson’s Mill on Flat Shoals Creek, Harris County is embedded. Iron thresholds bearing the legend, A.C. & H. W. Miller, form a step in the walk and a threshold where the old front-yard picket gate once stood. These thresholds were from the store of the Miller brothers, who began their business about 1870 at present 718 Third Avenue.
Henry W. Miller built the house in 1876. He was the son of Jacob and Nancy S. Lovelace Miller, Troup County pioneers who settled in West Point in 1831. He was born November 25, 1849 and died June 15, 1931. He married Lura D. Williams born January 7, 1856, died August 7, 1933.
Originally of four large rooms, central hall and kitchen in a separate building in the back yard, the upstairs rooms were added in the 1890’s, and later the sleeping porch across the upstairs front about 1925-30. The present wide porch was added at that time replacing the original narrow verandah ornamented with fretwork, wooden columns, banisters and lacy fretwork trim. The long front windows are full length to the floor.
It was the home of John Thomas Johnson (1874-1918) who married Ola E. Miller (1876-1961) in 1900- and their home until death. A civic leader, Mr. Johnson was mayor of West Point 1909-1918 and died at Marseilles France on October 30, 1918 while engaged in YMCA work during World War I. The Marseilles Cemetery at West Point commemorates the event of Mr. Johnson’s death, he being the first to be buried there. Mrs. Johnson was a beloved member of the First Methodist Church.”
The grandson of John & Ola Johnson, Stephen Johnson, resides at this historic property today. He is known for his tireless work for the city of West Point, the Troup County archives and his extraordinary knowledge of the history of West Point and Troup County. He is also an avid environmentalist.
This grand home features an inviting living room and formal parlor, formal dining room, morning room, kitchen, master bedroom and bath on the main. Upstairs are four more bedrooms and 3 full baths. There are rich heart of pine floors throughout this historic treasure. The kitchen and baths will need updating. There is central heat and air conditioning. With some TLC - mostly painting the interior and pulling up the carpet --presently covering the heart pine floors – the new owners will have an exceptional home and treasure.
And with its location on 7 + acres on U. S. Hwy 29 and an additional 2.5 acres directly across Hwy 29 which allow the views from the verandah to be lush green trees – this property would make an impressive Bed & Breakfast!
Other amenities: Adjacent to 170-acre West Point Park on Chattahoochee River; 26,000 acre West Point Lake & Southern Harbor Marina minutes away; Atlanta Hartsfield Airport 50 minutes away; Kia's first U.S. plant minutes away making this an excellent area for investment with the explosive growth; 20 minutes from upcoming development Celebration Alabama; 15 minutes from La Grange, and close to Point University/formerly Atlanta Christian opening in Fall of 2012!
