LAKE WARAMAUG: An Area that is filled with an endless array of outdoor activities.
Waramaug Lake is located on the shores of the Litchfield County Connecticut towns of Washington, Kent, and Warren. Although a natural lake, the surface elevation of Lake Waramaug has been permanently raised by an inconspicious concrete and masonry dam. Lake Waramaug has a surface area of approximately 680 acres, a maximum depth of 40 feet with an average depth of 22 feet, and is the repository of almost five billion gallons of water! Lake Waramaug is fed by Lake Waramaug Brook, also known as Sucker Brook, a number of small streams, and groundwater that percolates up through the lake bottom. Overflow from Lake Waramaug drains toward the south into the East Aspetuck River.
Lake Waramaug's shores are closely hugged by a beautiful winding level East, West, and North Shore Roads which collectively encircle Lake Waramaug in about seven miles. This scenic route around the lake has made Lake Waramaug a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and runners. Every year runs and other events are held along the lake's shores.
The lake has a maximum depth of 40 feet (12m) an average depth of 22 feet (7m), and contains approximately 4.8 billion gallons of water.
Along the lake's West shore is Lake Waramaug State Park w hich is a popular dstination for swimming, fishing, picnicking, and camping. The beach at the park is well maintained and the camping area offers 77 sites which often fill up on weekends in the summer. Canoe rentals are available during the summer months just south of the beach and Lake Waramaug State Park also offers a launch area for those who bring their own kayaks and canoes.
Further to the South along Lake Waramaug's West shore is the exclusive Lake Waramaug Country Club. Tracing it's inspiration back to 1898 and it's organization as Lake Waramaug Golf Club to 1902, the club as we know it today was created over the Fourth of July weekend in 1916 when the Lake Waramaug Yacht Club and the Lake Waramaug Golf Club held a joint meeting and combined forces under the banner of Lake Waramaug Country Club.
Across the lake is the well known and popular Hopkins Inn which offers contemporary Austrian cuisine in an attractive country inn overlooking Lake Waramaug which has welcomed travelers since 1847.
The shoreline development of Lake Waramaug is almost exclusively residential. Lake Waramaug real estate commands values that are among the highest in the country and the lake is often viewed by waterfront buyers as one of the most desirable.
Lake Waramaug is ia popular fishing venue (year round, including ice fishing) and fish species found in the lake include largemouth, smallmouth and calico bass; lake and rainbow trout; yellow and white perch; pickerel; alewives; sunfish and bullheads.
THE TOWN OF WASHINGTON:
Incorporated in 1779 the town of Washington encompasses the following Villages:
Washington Depot, Washington (or Washington Green), New Preston & Marbledale.
The present town was incorporated in 1779, being named in honor of General George Washington, who traveled through the area several times during wartime. For many years, Washington was principally a farming community. Among early local industries were ironworks and quarries as well as small mills and factories run by waterpower along the Shepaug and Aspetuck Rivers.
Washington is one of Connecticut's most scenic small towns, tucked into the foothills of Connecticut's Berkshire Mountains and accented by the natural beauty of Lake Waramaug, the Shepaug River, and the Bantam River.
The Town of Washington covers 38.7 square miles of Litchfield County, a section of the state known for its rolling hills, open space, and cultural pursuits.
Washington is a socially, culturally and economically rich community supported by a host of generous, caring citizens. They contribute time and money to ensure strong educational systems, quality library services, intelligent land use planning, first-rate emergency care and a wide range of intellectual and recreational activities. The Lake is located on the shores of the Litchfield Country Connecticut towns of Washington, Kent, and Warren.
