Possum Kingdom lake is the clearest in all of Texas. As a result, it is a favorite spot for inland scuba diving. Fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, golf and many other exciting activities are enjoyed here year round. Created from the impoundment of the Brazos River, the 65-mile-long lake covers 17,700 acres in north Texas with more than 300 miles of scenic shoreline. Managed by the Brazos River Authority, Lake Possum Kingdom provides water, recreation and hydroelectric power to residents of the Brazos River Basin. In the 1940's the river was dammed up to form this huge lake nestled within the dramatic North Texas hill country.

Fishing Information

Predominant Fish Species: Largemouth bass, white crappie, striped bass, white bass, channel and blue catfish.

Possum Kingdom offers a great variety of fish habitat, ranging from steep, rocky bluffs to shallow flats. Although old, this structure-rich water continues to produce excellent fishing and is particularly well-known for yielding large black bass and trophy stripers.

Of the three black bass species present in the lake, largemouth are by far the most abundant. Stocking of Florida strain largemouth in the 1970's improved the lake's potential for growing big bass. Typical largemouth caught by anglers weigh about 2 to 3 pounds, although 10-pounders are not uncommon. Larger sized fish caught and released during tournaments run 6 to 8 pounds. The lake record largemouth is an unusually big 16.02 pounds.

Spotted bass rank second in abundance to largemouth, followed by smallmouth. Both smallies and spots are more prevalent in the rocky lower lake. The lake record smallmouth is 6.4 pounds. The average size spotted bass measures a respectable 12 to 14 inches.

The cool, well-oxygenated water of Possum Kingdom supports a quality striped bass population. Although there is evidence of sporadic natural reproduction, it has little influence on abundance and the fishery is sustained almost entirely by annual fingerling stocking. An ample supply of gizzard and threadfin shad allows stripers to reach trophy proportions. Catches of 15- to 20-pounders are common, and a fish 25 pounds or better is considered a trophy. The lake record striper weighed 31.6 pounds.

Sand bass are fairly abundant and provide exciting action, especially during their spring migration. Catches of 1-pound fish are common, and anglers report creeling sandies up to 31/2 pounds.

Some of the best tailrace striper fishing in Texas is found in the Brazos River below the Morris Sheppard Dam. During winter, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocks catchable-size rainbow trout below the dam.

Camping Information

This area is family oriented. Possum Kingdom Lake is famous for family reunions and numerous Boy Scout and YMCA camps.

Possum Kingdom State Park, is located in north central Texas, just west of Fort Worth, in the rugged canyon county of the Palo Pinto Mountains. It is a picturesque park on Possum Kingdom Lake. The park is almost 1530 acres and is located in the Brazos River Valley. Park offers camping, day use, water sports, and hiking. A large portion of the official Texas Longhorn herd is located in the state park and numerous white tail deer make their home here. Other wildlife that can be observed here are mallard ducks, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, and of course, possums.

Facilities include restrooms with showers, boat ramp, dump station and two miles of hiking and nature trails. In addition to camp sites, the park offers six cabins that will accommodate four each. Visitors may enjoy swimming (no lifeguard on duty), water skiing, scuba diving, picnicking (tables, BBQ grills, drinking water, playgrounds), fishing (crappie, perch, catfish, stripped bass and bass), and boating with a concrete boat dock, launch and ramp and boat rental service available. The park is open all year. Reservations are recommended and can be made up to 90 days in advance. The busy season is mid-March through September. A store is located within 1 mile.

This feature is a natural break in the cliffs through which Jowell Creek flows into the Brazos River.
