Lake Champlain
Vermont and New York

Lake Champlain is the largest mountain lake and the sixth largest fresh water lake in the United States. It is located between upper New York State (The Adirondacks) and Vermont.  The largest cities on the lake are Burlington, Vermont and Plattsburgh, New York.

Lake Champlain on March 5th, 1998 became recognized as the Nation's Sixth Great Lake, with the signing, by President Clinton, of Senate Bill Number 927. The bill itself re-authorizes the Sea Grant Program (to study the environmental issues concerning the Great Lakes), but with a line item entered by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, the Bill makes Lake Champlain one of The Great Lakes. The newly acquired status allows Vermont Colleges (as well as other neighboring institutions) greater eligibility to apply for Federal Grants to study the Lake's ecological and historical impacts. This development adds Lake Champlain to the ranks of Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Superior and Lake Huron all of which have long been recognized as The Great Lakes.

Lake Champlain flows for 120 miles (193 kilometers), from Whitehall, New York north almost across the U.S.-Canadian border to its outlet at the Richelieu River in Quebec. From there, the water joins the St. Lawrence River, which eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean at the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It has 435 square miles (1127 square kilometers) of surface water, over 70 islands, 587 miles (945 kilometers) of shoreline, and is 12 miles (19 kilometers) at its widest point. Lake Champlain is 400 feet (122 meters) deep in some parts, but averages 64 feet deep.
