Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone Park, WY At 7,700 feet, Yellowstone Lake with 110 miles of shoreline, is the highest body of water of its size in the USA. Fishing permits are available for a small fee. Check with the rangers for a permit, then hook into one of the famous Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. Lodging, camping and supplies are all available at Bridge Bay Marina and at Lake. Boat launching is available at Bridge Bay. Strange phenomena have occured on and near Yellowstone Lake. In 1885, a party under the command of John Renshaw of the United States Geological Survey were on the lake in a small boat when out of a clear sky a single bolt of lightning struck the mast and killed one man on board. The most famous unexplained phenomena is known as The Music of the Lake. This is only heard in the vicinity of Yellowstone and Shoshone lakes. It has been discribed as a buzzing sound approaching the listener, passing overhead and then receding. The cause remains unknown. West Thumb Junction is located on one of the arms of Yellowstone Lake. There are several hot springs and mud pots in the geyser basin here. In the lake is an interesting feature known as Fishing Cone, a hot spring rising from the bottom of the lake. |
