WANT TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LAKE WILDWOOD?
Lake Wildwood is a beautiful, private, gated community nestled in a quiet country setting. It’s perfect for year round or a relaxing weekend getaway. Whether it be fishing, boating, swimming, camping, or just taking in the beauty of nature or riding around the lake on your golf cart.... enjoy the "GOOD LIFE" at Lake Wildwood!.
As a natural wildlife refuge, it is abundant with deer, fox, wild turkey, hawks, pheasants, owls, geese, ducks, great blue herons, bluebirds, raccoons, coyotes and more. Wildflowers and mushrooms are also abundant. Every spring, the National Audubon Society goes to Lake Wildwood to do a bird count. Several rare birds, including Eagles have been spotted.
Lake Wildwood is located in Marshall County in north central Illinois, less than 2 hours from Chicago, 30 minutes south & west of Starved Rock State Park, 1 1/2 hours south of Rockford, 35 minutes south of Peru, and 50 minutes north of Bloomington. Major highways leading here include Interstate 80, 39 and IL Routes 18,17, & 89.
Lake Wildwood comprises about 1433 acres of timberland,
ravines, rolling hills, grassy meadows, 2 lakes and many runoff creeks. There are over 1800 lots that are approximately 1/3 acre each, over 400 existing homes, with both seasonal and permanent residents.
Lake Wildwood is a property owner’s association, which means all property owners are members, whether or not they have improved their lots with homes. Members pay equal annual dues (currently $775) which entitles them to full use of amenities. This includes 5 boat launches, use of both lakes, 2 beaches, marina, an outdoor pool, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, golf practice range, fish cleaning facility, hiking trials, and a standing invitation to many community events. The campground and newly refurbished lodge are additional amenities available to members and their guests, however depending on the type of usage, there may be fees incurred.
At the lake, the recreation committee plans seasonal festivities such as a Spring Dance, fishing derby in June, 4th of July fireworks, August corn boil and fish fry, Fall Festival in September, Family Halloween celebration, Family Christmas Party, New Years Eve dinner and dance, teen dances, Easter egg hunt with a visit from the Easter bunny, youth and teen swim parties and several potlucks.
In addition, Central Illinois tradition specializes in small town celebrations all Summer and Fall. Spoon River Fest, Peoria Waterfront celebration, Henry’s Ice cream socials, 4th of July carnival and fireworks, Lacon Old Settler Days, Toluca Labor Day parade and carnival, and Annual Burgoo festival in Utica are just a few!
Located on the bluff over the east beach, with stone patio, picnic tables and grills, the 3600 sq ft Arrowhead Lodge has a kitchen, dining facilities, lounge area, dance floor, and beautiful stone fireplace. The full length deck has a sensational view of Lake Wildwood and east beach. The Lodge is used for Lake Wildwood sponsored activities
as well as by members for their own private gatherings. In the winter, it becomes a great place to sled and come inside occasionally to warm your toes by the fireplace. The key to the lodge is available to members at the security gate.
Private roads throughout Lake Wildwood offer areas for walkers, bikes, golf carts, etc. There are many park areas within the grounds which have been set aside for members use, providing access to the lake’s coves, woods, creeks, and meadows. These isolated spots have been left wild and are perfect for people who enjoy exploring.
Swimming areas are divided between the pool and 2 sandy beaches (or your own waterfront) where you will find the circumference of the lake zoned no wake outside the buoys. Lifeguards are on duty 7 days a week, weather permitting, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Golfers: Work with woods, irons, and wedges on the 3-hole
practice range in front of the dam. Also with in a 15 mile radius, you’ll be pleased to find several nice golf courses: Edgewood located in McNabb, Crooked Knee in Henry, Snag Creek in Washburn, Tall Oaks located in Toluca, and the Lacon Country Club.
The dam is an earth fill structure, 84 ft high, 1385 feet long. You can access the spectacular view of the lake and valley by crossing an observation bridge. This access also enables fisherman to throw in a line. Water depth is approximately 62 feet at the dam, 42 feet mid lake, and 14-20 feet in the marina area gradually tapering to 3-4 feet by the inlet.
Fish all 4 seasons on Lake Wildwood which is 218 acres. There is also a smaller fishing lake, Lake Tanglewood, (14 acres) where only self propelled and electric trolling boats are permitted. Tanglewood freezes most winters for fun activities like ice fishing, skating, and cross country skiing. Lake Wildwood offers many coves and the south end has a no wake zone where you can fish all day long, far removed from pleasure boaters. Both lakes are stocked annually according to input from our fish committee and the DNR. You can catch small and large mouth bass, hybrid stripers, channel cats, crappies, bluegills, walleye, northern pike, bullhead and more.
You can apply for a seasonal slip at the boat marina or store your boat (or camper) in the storage area near the Association office (both require a minimal fee). Boat length is limited to 19 ft for ski boats, 24 ft maximum for pontoons. Only one of each type boat is allowed per membership, therefore you could register a powerboat, a jet ski and a canoe but not 2 jet skis unless you paid for 2 memberships. There is a strictly enforced speed limit of 30 mph.
Also worth mentioning for boat loving adventurers is the distance to the Illinois River. 15 minutes down Rt17 is the Lacon marina where easy launching sets you free to travel south downriver to Peoria, a perfect daylong boat ride with plenty of marinas and beaches along the way. North, upriver, brings you to Henry, Hennepin, Peru and finally the spectacular sandstone bluffs of Starved Rock in Utica.
Near the main beach and the Lodge is the marina and concession area. The concession area serves sandwiches, ice cream and snacks seasonally. The marina has gas pumps for your convenience. Behind the marina and concession area is a large 300 sq ft pavilion with grills, picnic tables, restroom area and ball field.
There are many sponsored activities year round at both the lodge and pavilion. There are playgrounds throughout Lake Wildwood as well.
The campground is located behind Lake Tanglewood where many enjoy both summer and winter camping. Both RV and primitive sites are available. Seasonal sites are filled annually by a lottery and do require a fee. Some restrictions apply regarding guests. There is a shower house available to all campers.
Camping for members and their guests is restricted to the designated campground area, located on Lake Tanglewood and its outflow stream.
The Campground is nestled comfortably behind the dam and much of it is shaded by walnut and oak trees. Its footpaths and roads thread back and forth over a winding brook. Deer, wild turkey, and a host of local wildlife that live amidst the rose briars, blackberry brambles, bluebells and morels of Tanglewood’s timberland are frequent visitors.
The electric and primitive sites are accessible on first come, first served basis with a maximum of 16 days on one site. Also available are many seasonal electric sites and primitive seasonal sites. These sites sometimes have limited availability so a lottery system is used for allocation. Members camp free on non electric sites and pay per day for electric sites. Seasonal electric sites are currently (please call for rates)____ per season. Facilities include a dump station, water hook-ups, bath house, picnic pavilion and shelter, and playground. Pets are allowed on leashes.
Fishing is possible from the dam or by boat, and as a member, you and your guests are entitled to use of all amenities at Lake Wildwood including both lakes, beaches, pool, lodge and park areas for biking, hiking, swimming, boating and fishing.
Lake Wildwood has 24 hour security and its own patrol unit. It is in Fire District 8, with an active volunteer fire and ambulance dept. as well as its own substation near the Association office. Hospitals are also close, St. Margaret’s hospital in SpringValley/20 miles, Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru/30 miles, St. Francis, Methodist & Proctor in Peoria/ 45 miles.
