Catahoula Lake is not a true lake but a large low-lying basin which has a river and several distributaries running into it and exiting at two or more channels. In the summer it is a vast plain with grasses and other plants growing naturally on its surface with the narrow river channel visible which runs through it. In the fall locks and dams are closed by the US Corps of Engineers and the basin is then flooded. The height of the water is determined by rainfall on the uplands and back flow water which may come in from the Mississippi or Black River and the Red River.
These flooded grasslands become the attraction for vast flocks of waterfowl which have historically gathered at this spot on the "Mississippi Flyway". The duck hunting here has been legendary.
In its dry stage (summer through early fall) the gates are opened and it becomes a favorite spot for four-wheeling and trail-riders who use trails which cut through the grasslands
When the gates are closed, water depth can vary from a few feet to a depth of 10 feet on average. Flooding at much higher stages occurs when incoming backwaters from the Mississippi River or other distributaries reach flood-stage , usually later in the winter months. At times when water is being held jet skiing, sailing or any other water activity is permitted, including activities involving power boats. Certain areas may be regulate "airboating". There are no marinas or ports located in this immediate area, but there are areas in the vicinity which can be used without fees. However there is nothing to prevent the owner from installing a marina or dock on his property.
Possibilities exist for guided tours with blinds in duck season and for a whole different use for the summer months making for versatile year around use.
