With around 32,500 acres of lake surface to accommodate boaters and fishermen, the fishing at the lake is good throughout most of the year. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has stocked every game fish native to the State of Arkansas.
Little Red River that flows out of the dam and tributes to producing some of the largest walley in the world. Fishermen associate Greers Ferry Lake with walleye fishing. A national walleye tournament is held on Greers Ferry Lake every year. The world record walleye weighing more than 22 pounds was caught here. The largemouth and smallmouth bass, the spotted or Kentucky bass, the striped bass/white bass hybrids, the lake trout, crappie and bream are all species found in the lake.
The new world's record hybrid bass weighing 27 pounds, 5 ounces was caught on Greers Ferry Lake by a local guide in April 1997. He fought the fish for 25 minutes. Jerry Shaum of Shirley knew he had a huge fish on the line. He held on until the battle was won. He was trolling in 45 feet of water.
The Little Red River feeds Greers Ferry Lake. A world-class fishery for brown trout and rainbow trout, the Little Red River produced another world record fish: a 40-pound, 4-ounce brown trout, in 1992, beating the earlier record catches of 28 to 29 pounds.
