Because of its enormous size, Toledo Bend transcends state lines. Though the dam that created the reservoir is in Newton County, Texas, near Burkeville, the entire reservoir is not in Texas. The reservoir goes up the river through the Texas counties of Sabine, Shelby, and Panola and occupies parts of Louisiana as well. It finally ends up near Logansport, Louisiana, 65 miles north of the dam. On the west border of the reservoir in Texas, much of the land is undeveloped and belongs to Sabine National Forest. Fishing and boating are two of the many activities that attract lake homeowners. The 1200 miles of shoreline created by Toledo Bend makes for a diverse landscape where a variety of fish make their homes in the waters, including striped bass, crappie, and catfish. Boats can access almost any part of the lake from the docks and marinas all along its shore, and a number of boat docks provide easy and quick boat access along the shoreline. In the north section of the lake, choose from several marinas in either Texas or Louisiana, such as Bill’s Landing or Geronimo Village. Plenty of marinas spot the middle and south sections of the lake, too. The body of some of the lake is obstructed by numerous trees, stumps, and logs, thereby creating a great habitat for fish and wildlife. However, specific boat lanes have been cleared of such obstructions to allow for recreational watercraft. Surrounding Texas and Louisiana towns provide plentiful golfing resources, just a short drive from your lake-view cabin.
