There are about 14 Subdivisions and lots of land around the perimeter of the lake with a variety of types of lake development. Leesville Lake was named after the township of LEESVILLE and is the beautiful "sister" of Smith Mtn Lake and part of the entire Smith Mountain Project developed by Appalachian Power which includes two Dams for hydroelectric clean-electricity to the region. The Staunton River flows out of Leesville dam, and offers great fishing, canoeing and kayaking. A major tributary to LVL lake is the Pigg River that can also be explored by Kayak or canoe from the lake.
