About Lake Barkley
If you're interested in lake homes for sale in Kentucky, keep Lake Barkley in mind. Lake Barkley sprawls 134 miles, joining the Kentucky Lake to form a massive recreation and conservation wonderland. "The Land Between the Lakes" runs along the edge of the lake for 50 miles and hosts countless outdoor adventures and accommodations, and Lake Barkley's waters are always looked to for good times and great memories!
Lake Barkley is truly grand in size and scope, as it borders the Kentucky counties of Trigg, Lyon, and Livingston before stretching into Tennessee. The Barkley Dam holds up the Cumberland River, providing flood control and hydroelectric power, along with one of the most prized lake systems in the entire region. Anglers certainly appreciate the 58,000 acres of fishing paradise that Lake Barkley offers. In the fall, bait your hook for largemouth bass, and keep in mind that the crappie spawn in the spring. Really though, Lake Barkley fishing is fantastic year-round: you can also hunt for bluegill, sauger, channel catfish, Kentucky bass, and white bass. Even if you head out on the lake without a specific catch in mind, you're bound to come home with a keeper, or two!
Lake homes for sale are speckled across 1,004 miles of Lake Barkley's unspoiled shoreline. In addition to being privileged to stunning sunsets and landscapes, these lake-view properties also enjoy access to all the recreation opportunities to be had in and out of the water. Rent a canoe, kayak, pontoon boat, or ski boat at the main marina or launch your own: the marina features 60 open boat slips, 112 covered slips, and a boat launch. Explore the more secluded coves and inlets, and make a few waves by picking up speed towards the center of the lake. Swimming and sunbathing on the sandy beach is always another great option, whether or not you have a taste for adrenaline on a water toy.
The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area borders the west side of Lake Barkley, and is home to 170,000 acres of outdoor recreation action. Indigenous animal and plant species coexist in peace with adventure-seekers and nature enthusiasts, as there's plenty of room for all. Traverse countless trails by foot, bike, or horseback and just take it all in. Another great way to take in the spectacular scenery is from an immaculate fairway. Local golf courses such as Drake Creek, Mineral Mounds, and Boots Randolf all have awe-inspiring views of the lake. Lake Barkley was impounded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1966. The dam impounds the Cumberland River near Grand Rivers, Kentucky, approximately 38 miles up stream from where the Cumberland empties into the Ohio River. One mile above the dam is a canal connecting Lake Barkley with Kentucky Lake, forming one of the greatest freshwater recreational complexes in the country. The lakes run parallel courses for more than 50 miles with Land Between the Lakes recreational area located between them. Lake Barkley is 134 miles long with a shoreline measuring 1,004 miles. The lake's level is fluctuated from summer to winter for flood control purposes. Summer pool (359 ft. sea level) is normally reached by May 1. The water level begins dropping gradually on July 1, and winter pool (354 ft.) is reached by Dec. 1. The spring rise starts April 1. The lake's water surface area varies accordingly from 57,920 acres at summer pool to 45,210 acres at winter pool. Updated daily, the Army Corps of Engineers provides an online lake report which not only includes daily fishing information, but also provides the current lake level, water temperature and discharge rate.
A Safe Boating Test is now required for anyone 12-17 years of age who operates a boat over 10 horse power. This new safety requirement also applies to personal watercraft. For more information on this new Kentucky law or for information on taking the Safe Boating Test visit the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife site.

Lake Barkley Quick Facts
Lake Barkley Fishing Information
May and June are typically the best fishing months on the lake. Crappie can still be caught post spawn and bass will be found on gravel points and around stumps. Catfish can be found on gravel points that taper off to a mud layer. Bluegill, which often spawn later, can be taken with grubs, worms, and crickets. During July and August, the white bass can provide fun and excitement for any angler. Look for them to jump along the river drops and flats, and use a rooster tail, lead spoon, or top water lure to bring these aggressive fish in the boat. Don't be surprised if you hook a largemouth bass while fishing the jumps. They are known to often travel in the same schools to feed.
The peaceful shoreline and colorful fall foliage lend itself to some of the year's most scenic fishing. You can catch fish using spring fishing techniques. Catch largemouth bass in the brush, tree tops, and on riprap. Crappie will normally make one more run to shallow water. Look for them in 5-12 feet of water near brush piles and brushy drop-offs. To make your fishing experience more successful, consider renting a boat or booking a local fishing guide.
