Lake Wedowee / RL Harris Reservoir Information

If you’re looking for lake homes for sale in Alabama, set your sights on Lake Wedowee, in Randolph County. Also known as the R. L. Harris Reservoir, Lake Wedowee is a popular destination for visitors in the know and locals in search of an outdoor haven. Fishing is the main attraction on the lake, as the pristine waters host some truly attractive catches, but there’s plenty more to see and experience for yourself!

Since its development in 1983, Lake Wedowee has not only supplied hydroelectric power to surrounding areas, but it has also served as a welcome respite for anyone looking to reconnect with the great outdoors and enjoy some refreshing recreation in the process. Anglers certainly appreciate the variety of fish the lake hosts, baiting their hooks for crappie, catfish, sunfish, bluegill, and bass. Largemouth bass fishing is particularly fruitful at Wedowee Creek, which is an especially fertile tributary. If you’re out on the lake in the springtime, try your luck at crappie hunting. The fish are known to frequent the heavily wooded coves and tributaries along the main channel. Cast your line beneath the cover of the stars in the summertime and rejoice in your two favorite things: fishing and a clear, warm Alabama night!

Lake Wedowee is prized for so much more than its fishing, too. Along with lake homes for sale, several public boat launches, marinas, and access points are strategically situated along the water’s edge to ensure you’re never inconvenienced when it comes time to hit the waves. After all, 10,600 acres of brilliantly glistening surface water awaits you! Launch your sailboat, powerboat, kayak, or canoe anytime, and be sure to enter any or all of the annual Jet Ski competitions. You may also like to take it down a notch by following sections of the 270-mile-long shoreline; find yourself a quiet cove or empty patch of beach and settle in. Sometimes the best way to spend the day is to just watch it pass you by!

Find your land legs and explore the rural appeal of Lake Wedowee’s surroundings. Bathed in the shadows of the great Appalachian and Talladega Mountains, the lake is both secluded and unspoiled. It’s so refreshingly detached, in fact, that it’s easy to forget lake-view properties are only 65 miles from Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama. Though, you’re still never too far from your true passion: golf! Several noteworthy public golf courses are only a short drive in any direction from the lake. To name a few, Bowdon, Cider Ridge, Anniston, and Pine Hill Country Club look forward to hosting your next day out on the links. If you’d like to live on a Lake Wedowee golf course, visit GolfHomes.com for property listings and details.

Let the untamed beauty of Alabama’s most revered landscapes set the tone for your Lake Wedowee experience so you can savor all the lake has to give!

It is a beautiful environmental lake that is perfect for swimming, skiing, fishing and boating. The Tallapoosa River and the Little Tallapoosa River primarily feed Lake Wedowee which is located almost entirely in Randolph County. From maps, you can see that 98% of Lake Wedowee's watershed is from rural and undeveloped areas which provides water quality unmatched by other lakes.

Lake Wedowee is also considered a mountain lake, and rightly so at a summer pool elevation of 793 above mean sea level. The flood level is 795, 2 feet above summer pool level. This level will virtually eliminate flood damages to docks, boats, and boat houses which commonly occur at lakes with 4, 6, or 8 foot flood easements. To the 800 foot mark above mean sea level is the scenic easement of Alabama Power Company. Winter level is 785, a fluctuation of 8 feet.
