Lake LBJ Information

Lake LBJ, named after President Lyndon B. Johnson, is part of the Highland Lakes chain of seven lakes starting in Austin and going northwest for over 85 miles. Lake LBJ starts near Horseshoe Bay, 45 miles from Austin, and goes all of the way to Kingsland. Lake LBJ is mostly a constant level lake with Water Level Fluctuation: 0 - 2 feet annually and is just over 21 miles long with a maximum width of 10,800 feet and size of 6,375 acres, maximum depth 90 feet, impounded in 1951.

Lake LBJ is a popular lake for boating and water skiing. Tourists are attracted from all over Texas and the U.S. to take advantage of this big beautiful lake. Many people in Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Dallas own weekend lake homes on the lake. Many of these people also retire in the area.

Camping Information

Lake LBJ is a great place to rent a cabin, condo, motel or park your RV. All are open year round. RV Parks located on the waterfront of Lake LBJ in Kingsland, allow you to enjoy watching all of the boating activity on the lake. The sunsets are absolutely beautiful over the lake. There are also vacation rental homes along the lake.

Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site Visitors to this day-use park can enjoy historical study, picnicking, nature study, fishing, and view Texas longhorn cattle. The abundant wildlife of the Hill Country is highlighted by enclosures containing buffalo, longhorn, and white-tailed deer. These animals have played a part in the park's history and the local wildlife continues to be an important attraction for visitors. The park is famous for its spring wildflower display. Facilities include restrooms without showers; picnic sites with and without shelters; a snack bar within one mile; a museum; an interpretive center; an auditorium (capacity 234 people); an amphitheater; a swimming pool; playgrounds; a 1.25-mile-long, Paseo Del Arroyo (meaning "Creek Walk") Nature trail; historic structures; plus tennis courts, and a baseball field, which can be reserved through the park. (Donation boxes are available). Pool hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 8:00 p.m. daily through August 15. Then it will only be open on weekends through August 29, ending the 1999 season. The pool may be rented after hours by private groups. There is a dining hall (capacity 80) and a group picnic area (capacity 200). A bookstore is operated by Southwest Parks and Monuments Association (SPMA). A scout hut is under construction for future use as an education center.

Inks Lake State Park Visitors enjoy camping, backpacking, hiking, and golf. Since Inks is a constant level lake, droughts do not affect water-related activities such as lake swimming (unsupervised beach), boating, water skiing, scuba diving, and fishing. Activities such as nature walks, geology hikes, fish seining, lakeshore ecology, and Junior Ranger programs are conducted on Saturdays in the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), and by special request through the park office. TCP activities, such as the Devil's Waterhole Canoe Tour, are conducted the second and fourth Thursday of the month in April, May, September, October, and November; every Thursday in June and July; and the first and second Thursday in August.

Longhorn Cavern State Park The park features historical and nature study. Located in the heart of the Highland Lakes, Longhorn Cavern is near four different lakes and communities that offer excellent opportunities in camping, fishing, and hunting. Facilities include a gift shop, a full service deli and snack counter, a picnic area, and 2 miles of hiking trails. The park is open for day-use only. It is operated by concessionaire, Longhorn Cavern, Inc. An exhibit of Civilian Conservation Corps work done in the Texas State Parks System is on display in the original administration building; no fee.

There are several communities along the lake: Kingsland, Highland Haven, Granite Shoals, Sunrise Beach, Deer Haven, Blue Lake and Horseshoe Bay. Lake LBJ is a great retirement area as well as a recreational area. This area has been rated in the top three areas of the U.S. for retirement.
