Bass Lake Information

The Natural Wonder of Bass Lake, Indiana

Bass Lake in Starke County, Indiana, has long been a marvel for the local population. This naturally-occurring lake is illogically perched at the top of a hill, and it is remarkably shallow, with an average depth of only 9 feet. But this serene lake is one of the best fishing spots in Indiana, which makes a Bass Lake lake house the perfect destination for anglers and outdoor families. If you’re ready to experience a lake house adventure that marches to the beat of its own drum, check out Bass Lake.

All About that Bass

Bass Lake is named for the abundant black bass population that can be fished up here. Large and smallmouth bass are the most common catch you’ll find near your Bass Lake lake house. Crappie, bluegill, and perch also swim in these waters. But the lake is prized by Indiana fisherman because it is one of the only places in the state with a record for good fishing of walleye and white bass. While the lake itself is a natural wonder, the state has improved it by establishing a sandy beach along the southeast shore that spans seven acres. The 1400 acres of water make this Indiana’s fourth-largest natural lake, and its shallow nature makes it a perfect spot for swimming; while the lake does reach up to 32 feet of depth in some spots, there are expansive stretches of shoreline where you can wade for a considerable distance before reaching deep water. Boats, both motorized and sail-powered, are welcome on the lake, along with personal watercraft like canoes and kayaks. On the last full weekend in July, the lake is home to the Bass Lake Festival and its seemingly endless list of events and activities, like a cardboard boat race, sailboat race, sand sculpture contest, cornhole tournament, ice cream eating contest, live entertainment, brew fest, fireworks, and much, much more! While many people assume that summer is the only time to rent a lake house, Bass Lake is a great place for winter revelry, as well. Ice fishing is popular with community residents, as is snowmobiling.

Into the Woods

Bass Lake is just north of Tippecanoe River State Park. This heavily forested woodland is a great place to go hiking or biking, since it has over 23 miles of trails (some of which are shared with horseback riders). But this isn’t just any state park with spectacular vegetation and peaceful picnic areas—this park offers a nature center that provides unique arts events, like step-by-step painting classes, craft workshops for wood carving and journal making, and creative writing in nature, to name just a few. It also offers nature-focused events, like classes on native wildlife and group stargazing.

There’s no question that Bass Lake is an area with its own personality, from its remarkable hilltop location to its distinctive local events. Your stay in a Bass Lake lake house is sure to be as unique as this little slice of Indiana.
